Free GEO tool
Free GEO tool for ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode
Generative engine optimization (GEO) starts with knowing where you stand. CiteWhy asks the AI engines your keyword the way a real customer would and shows who gets mentioned, which sources decide it, and what to do to get in. No subscription, no paywall.
Free to use. You only pay for usage directly to Google and DataForSEO – typically a few dollars per analysis.
What is GEO?
GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand mentioned and recommended in AI-generated answers – in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.
It is related to SEO, but the game is different. There is no list of ten results to climb. The customer gets one answer with a handful of names, and the AI builds that answer from the pages it reads along the way and what it already knows.
So GEO is about two things: being on the pages the AI trusts, and being the obvious answer to the questions the AI asks your customers.
What the GEO tool measures
Your share of the AI answers
How often you are mentioned compared with your competitors, per AI engine and in total.
Where you drop out
The AI's follow-up questions about budget, size or needs, and the answers where a competitor takes over.
The sources behind every mention
The pages the AI ties to each name – comparisons, lists, reviews and forums – and which of them don't mention you.
AI versus Google
Which of the AI's sources are also in Google's top 10 for the searches the AI made itself.
How you are described
Quotes from the answers, because being mentioned is not the same as being recommended.
A plan
Concrete actions in order of priority, tagged for website or PR.
Why one AI answer is not enough
AI answers vary from one time to the next. CiteWhy asks every search 3 times and counts across the answers, so a single lucky or unlucky answer doesn't decide the result.
When the AI asks a follow-up question, CiteWhy answers it the way different customers would and follows each answer as a new, more specific search. That is how you see the segments where you win and the ones where you disappear.

CiteWhy has no subscription and no paid tier. You connect your own API keys and pay the usage directly to Google and DataForSEO – typically a few dollars per analysis. The example above cost US$1.79.
With only a Gemini key you can run Gemini. With a DataForSEO login, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google's top 10 are included.
How to use the results
Get onto the pages the AI cites
Start with the sources that mention your competitors but not you. They shape the answer in more than one AI at once.
Answer the AI's questions on your own site
If you drop out at “budget: free” or “for small teams”, make it clear on your site that you fit that need.
Measure again
Run the same keyword after a few weeks and compare. The history shows whether your share moves.
Good questions
Is CiteWhy really free?
Yes. There is no subscription. You only pay the usage on your own API keys directly to Google and DataForSEO.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is about ranking in Google's list of results. GEO is about being mentioned in the AI's answer. They overlap, because the AI often reads the same pages that rank in Google – CiteWhy shows you which ones.
Which AI engines does the GEO tool cover?
ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. You choose which ones to include in each analysis.
Can I analyse a market without my own brand?
Yes. Leave the name empty and you get a neutral competitor overview: who leads overall and per topic, and which sources they rely on.
Do I need technical skills?
No. You need to create an API key, and CiteWhy guides you step by step. After that you type a keyword and pick the AIs.
